December tournament

Nov 20 2006

The second Michezo Youth Initiative tournament will be held over the weekend of December 9 and 10, 2006. It was decided by the youth volunteers that to fit in the required number of games to host a tournament for three age groups and both males and females two days was required. This will allow each game to consist of two 20-minute halves, and allow us to more effectively run the Life Skills activities for all teams before each game.

This tournament will also see the implementation of pre-registration for all teams before the tournament weekend. This is being tried with two aims in mind, 1) to avoid the chaotic scenes that begun the first tournament and allow the youth volunteers to focus on the Life Skills and the actual playing of the games, and 2) with an eye on the plan within 6 to 12 months that the teams will be playing in a weekly league format, which will obviously require teams to register at the start of the "season".

The planning for this tournament has also seen a lot more hands on involvement by the Michezo Youth volunteers. David, the program manager from Australia, has begun to train the youth in the various aspects of the planning and coordination required for running a tournament of this type. While there have obviously been some ups and downs with how the youth have performed ? only to be expected when you?re asking young people to attempt work they have never done before ? eventually it will mean a more effective process for implementing the program with tasks shared across a variety of people. The youth are also picking up some valuable skills and experience that should see them become more and more instrumental in the long term growth and success of the project.
